How to Eat Dried Figs - 4 Ways to Try!

How to Eat Dried Figs - 4 Ways to Try!

Dried figs make a delicious healthy snack. So whether you’re a fan of fruity Black Mission figs, or prefer traditional Turkish figs, here are four ways to enjoy them!

1. Create Your Own Personal Figgy Fruit and Nut Mix

Fig Mix

Dried figs make the perfect pick-me-up snack. They’re sweet, chewy, and full of dietary fiber that will help to keep you feeling full until your next proper meal. While a handful of dried figs on their own is delicious, for an even better mid-afternoon snack, why not make your own figgy fruit and nut mix.

By bringing together the fiber and sweetness from dried figs with your favorite combination of freshly roasted nuts, you’ve created the ultimate balance of healthy fats, fiber, and protein. We recommend trying a sweet and salty mix by choosing our juicy Black Mission dried figs and pairing them with our lightly salted kernel mix.

2. Bake with Dried Figs

Baked Figs

The natural sweetness of quality dried figs makes them an ideal baking partner. Try chopping up some dried figs and adding them to muffins or cookies for a deliciously chewy and sweet alternative to chocolate chips or raisins. Dried figs also work exceptionally well in savory baking, adding just a hint of sweetness to rosemary focaccia and a delicate fruity flavor to a goat’s cheese tart.

3. Make a Dried Fig Jam

Fig Jam

To add a whole new layer of versatility to dried figs, try making them into a dried fig jam. Fig jam can be mixed into cakes, spread on bread, eaten alongside meat, and makes a fantastic accompaniment to cheese! Here’s how to make your own fig jam.

  1. Add 28oz of dried figs to a saucepan, cover with four cups of water and bring to a boil.
  2. Once boiling, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the figs to plump up for about 30 minutes.
  3. Use a slotted spoon to remove your dried figs from the water. Keep the water to one side.
  4. If your dried figs have stems on, then remove these now that the figs are soft.
  5. Chop your dried figs roughly and set them aside.
  6. Next, add the juice of two lemons, three cups of sugar, and the reserved fig liquid to a saucepan and bring these to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes. The juice should thicken slightly.
  7. At this point, add in your chopped figs and then simmer for a further 15 minutes.
  8. At this point, add in vanilla or any other flavorings that you like before ladling the mixture into sterilized jam jars.
  9. To preserve your fig jam for a more extended period of time, process your jars by canning them in a hot water bath for ten minutes.

4. Make Dried Fig Bliss Balls

Bliss Balls

Lastly, for sumptuous sticky and sweet bliss balls, you have to try making them with dried figs! We’ve already written a post about bliss balls and how to make them, which should help you create your own. Personally, we think that the combination of dates, nuts, and figs is a match made heaven, but feel free to spice up your bliss balls with your own favorite ingredients.

These are just four ways that you can eat dried figs, though many more are just a Google search away, which one would you like to try first? Find out everything you need to know about dried figs here
