What Are The Health Benefits Of A Keto Diet?

The keto diet is a very low carb, moderate protein, and high-fat diet designed to put your body into a state known as ketosis. Whereas ordinarily, the body uses glucose from carbohydrates for energy; in ketosis, the body burns fat for fuel. Initially, the keto diet was developed to help treat children with epilepsy; however, it was soon picked up outside of the medical field and is now used by people worldwide to help with weight loss. As a reasonably extreme diet, the keto diet remains somewhat controversial; however, the benefits are undeniable when it is followed for short periods of time. Here are a few of the main health benefits of the keto diet.

The Keto Diet Can Help You To Lose Weight

Although the keto diet was initially developed to help children with epilepsy, it became popular because it was very useful for weight loss. There are two main reasons why the keto diet can help you to lose weight:

  • It reduces your appetite.
Studies have shown that by removing carbohydrates from your diet, you can effectively suppress your appetite. On the keto diet, participants tend to eat far less than if they were eating a standard diet, which ultimately puts them in a calorie deficit that leads to weight loss.

  • It reduces water retention.
  • In addition to helping participants reach a calorie deficit without feeling hungry, the keto diet also causes the body to rid itself of excess water. This can lead to dramatic weight loss results, especially at the beginning of the diet.

The Keto Diet Reduces Your Risk Of Heart Disease

Although there have been very few studies conducted on long-term usage of the keto diet, short term studies have shown that eating minimal carbs, and a high-fat diet can help to reduce the number of fatty molecules (triglycerides) in the bloodstream. When people cut carbs from their diet, the reduction in triglycerides in their blood is dramatic, and they benefit from a reduced risk of heart-disease almost immediately.

The Keto Diet Reduces Your Insulin And Blood Sugar Levels

For those with type-2 diabetes or insulin resistance, the keto diet can help them significantly reduce their blood sugar and insulin levels. In fact, one study in people with type 2 diabetes found the keto diet so effective that 95% of participants could reduce or eliminate their need for medication over six months.

The Keto Diet Can Help Several Brain Disorders

Finally, the keto diet is still used to help treat and even cure a number of brain disorders, including epilepsy. In one study of epileptic children, 16% of them were able to cure their epilepsy, and a further 50% were able to reduce the frequency of their seizures significantly. Research on the keto diet’s effectiveness for other brain conditions, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, is still underway but the initial results are promising.

Although eating a very low carb and high-fat diet may seem unconventional, there’s no doubting the potential health benefits of this unconventional way of eating when the diet is followed safely for short periods of time!
