What is Tahini?
Tahini is a deliciously smooth paste, similar to nut butters, made from ground sesame seeds. It has a nutty, earthy flavour and can be a bit bitter. In terms of nutrition, tahini is high in protein and a excellent source of heart-healthy fats and dietary fiber, as well. Not to mention, it can be used to replace peanut butter or any other nut butters for anyone with a nut allergy or for those kiddos attending a nut-free school.
Ingredients
- Quick oats. Quick oats are the base of the energy bites. If you want to make sure the recipe is gluten-free, be sure to carefully select gluten-free oats. If you have rolled oats at home instead of quick oats, feel free to use those instead.
- Almond meal. The texture of almond meal makes it a perfect base for all sorts of baked goods. It will help keep the energy bites together. You can substitute breadcrumbs or any other type of ground nut or seed, if you don’t have almond meal at home.Â
- Raw almonds. Almonds add crunch, flavour and a healthy dose of protein and healthy fats. We recommend only using raw almonds and not roasted almonds.
- Date syrup. Date syrup is a natural sweetener that will make these bites extra delicious. You can substitute honey if you don’t have date syrup at home.
- Tahini. A key ingredient of these energy bites. You can find tahini with the other nut butters in the grocery store.
- Desiccated coconut. Desiccated coconut is basically finely ground coconut, instead of the larger coconut flakes. We only recommend using desiccated coconut as the larger flakes won’t work as well to form the balls.Â
