Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, are the fruit of the Lycium barbarum or the Lycium chinense plant. Originating in Asia, goji berries did not become popular in the US or Europe until the early 2000s, but following their emergence into the health food market, they are now considered a superfood! Here are eight fun facts that we bet you didn’t know about these delicious and healthy little red berries. 

Goji berries have featured in Chinese medicine for more than 2000 years. 

Goji berries have a very long medicinal history dating back to at least 200BC! Considered to be a healing herb, they featured prominently in Chinese medicine and are still prescribed as a healing ingredient to this day. \

China is still the largest producer of goji berries worldwide.

Despite the US and parts of Europe beginning to cultivate their own goji berries, China remains the largest producer, exporting their goji berries all over the world. 

Goji berries can improve fertility. 

Studies have found that regular consumption of goji berries can help to improve male fertility. Goji berries have also been used to improve the fertility of women, especially those with premature ovarian failure. Drinking goji berry juice is also strongly associated with improving libido, so if you’re trying to conceive then you may want to consider adding a handful of goji berries into your diet. 

China is still the largest producer of goji berries worldwide.

Despite being delicious fresh, goji berries are most commonly eaten dried because they spoil very easily. Drying the berries before transporting them improves their longevity and ensures that they reach their end customer without getting crushed or going moldy.

The best way to eat dried goji berries is to soak them first.

Dried goji berries can be very hard. Although some people love their chewy texture, others prefer them a little softer. To restore dried goji berries to their soft and plump state, all you need to do is to soak them in cold water for 20 minutes or overnight. 

Goji berries have a low glycemic index

Goji berries have a lower glycemic index (GI) than many other fruits, making them a great snack option for diabetics or those trying to avoid sugar spikes. Because goji berries have a lower GI, they aren’t as sweet as some other berries, which gives them a slightly herby flavor. 

Goji berries could help to prevent age-related macular degeneration. 

A recent study published in the Journal of American Academy Optometry revealed that goji berries could potentially protect people against age-related macular degeneration. It is thought that this could be because goji berries contain a large number of antioxidants including zeaxanthin which is closely connected to eye health. 

Goji berries can interact with warfarin. 

Because goji berries are a member of the nightshade family, they can interact with certain blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin. For this reason, people taking warfarin are often advised against eating goji berries alongside other foods such as kale, asparagus, and broccoli.
