How Many Goji Berries To Eat A Day?

What Is an Appropriate Serving of Goji Berries?

Once you start eating goji berries, it can be hard to stop. But, like most foods, eating too many at once may not be good for you. So how many should you eat in one sitting?

The recommended serving size for goji berries

The recommended serving size for goji berries differs slightly depending on how your goji berries have been processed.

  • Dried goji berries

The recommended serving size for dried goji berries is one-ounce, which is approximately 28g or two tablespoons, but most people can safely consume a little more than this with no concerns.

  • Goji berry juice

If you’re drinking high-quality goji berry juice, or making it yourself from the fresh fruit, then 30ml taken twice daily is the recommended serving size.

  • Fresh goji berries

If you can get your hands on fresh goji berries, then you can safely consume up to 150g of them in a single serving.

  • Goji capsules

And as for goji capsules, 2500mg is the usual dosage, though because goji berry capsules are quite potent, you should always consult a doctor or medical professional, especially if you are breastfeeding or pregnant.

Who shouldn’t eat goji berries

Goji berries are a member of the nightshade family, and so they do interact with some drugs, including warfarin, a popular blood thinner. Most doctors will recommend that you steer clear of goji berries if you take warfarin, or if you are on diabetes medication or blood pressure drugs, as interactions have been reported. If you’re concerned about eating goji berries while on medication, it is always best to speak to your doctor beforehand.

What happens if you eat too many goji berries?

When eaten in moderation and as a part of a balanced and healthy diet, goji berries can be extremely beneficial. However, if consumed in excess, like all good things, they can start to have an adverse effect. Before you start panicking about the potential side effects of eating too many goji berries, rest assured, you’d need to eat a lot of them!

If for whatever reason, you do find yourself consuming a whole large bag of goji berries in one sitting, then some of the potential side effects include gas, bloating, diarrhea, and difficulty sleeping. Most of the possible side effects of eating too many goji berries are caused by over-consuming certain nutrients such as fiber, potassium, and selenium, which in excess can cause digestive issues.

Can you eat goji berries when you are pregnant?

The short answer to this question is yes! You can eat goji berries when you are pregnant so long as you consume them in moderation. Goji berries contain a number of essential nutrients that your body needs during pregnancy and can help to get rid of morning sickness and lower back pain. That being said, eating too many goji berries, especially if you have high blood pressure, are diabetic, or taking anticoagulants, is not recommended and could harm your pregnancy.

The bottom line

When enjoyed in moderation, goji berries are a delicious, healthy, and nutritious snack that can be eaten by most people. As with all good things, eating too many of them in one sitting can cause digestive issues and other complications, so take note of the recommended serving size for the product that you have purchased and eat them responsibly.
